The disease

Why it matters

Pain is one of the most common and least controlled consequences of cancer in dogs, from bone tumors to soft-tissue tumors. It combines inflammatory and neuropathic components, and in advanced disease it often limits quality of life before the tumor itself does. NSAIDs and opioids remain the standard of care, with limits on long-term use.

Target and mechanism

What the vaccine does

The same immunogen as Xep01 for osteoarthritis pain, evaluated here for pain associated with cancer. In cancer pain, as in osteoarthritis, NGF and Substance P sensitize nerve endings, and Substance P activates mast cells and sustains neurogenic inflammation around the tumor.
