The disease

Why it matters

Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of chronic pain, lameness and reduced athletic performance in horses, and a significant economic burden for the equine industry.

It is characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone remodeling, synovitis and joint inflammation, driven by mechanical overload, trauma and sustained low-grade inflammation.

NSAIDs and corticosteroids offer symptomatic relief, but do not halt disease progression and carry long-term safety concerns.

Target and mechanism

What the vaccine does

Neuropeptides and growth factors such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and Substance P sensitize nerve endings in the joint and amplify the pain signal. Substance P also activates mast cells and sustains chronic neurogenic inflammation in the joint. Xeptiva’s immunotherapy is designed to neutralize these mediators safely and durably, aiming for competition-compliant solutions for training and performance phases, where conventional drugs are often limited or prohibited.
